He says participation in demonstrations has “potentially serious foreign policy consequences.”
Immigration Judge Jamee Comans ruled on Friday that Columbia University graduate student Mahmoud Khalil can be deported by President Trump’s administration for participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The Algerian citizen, born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria, was attending Columbia on a student visa. He was detained by federal immigration agents in New York in March and transported to a detention center in Louisiana to face trial there. Secretary of State Marco Rubio mandated his arrest, citing a policy giving the state secretary the power to deport individuals who pose “potentially serious adverse foreign policy consequences for the United States.”
The president’s administration maintains that Khalil’s participation in protests was “pro-Hamas” behavior. Judge Comans agreed, saying that the government had “established by clear and convincing evidence that he is removable.”
Khalil’s attorney said they would appeal to the Board of Immigration Appeals.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For federal judges as they hear and issue opinions on cases related to immigration and deportation.
- For the president and his national security advisors as they seek the removal of foreign citizens who support terrorist groups.
